| - Let me begin by saying that When they were seen by Dr. Ellis our experiences here were great. The office is clearly set up with all the bells and whistles necessary to quell and nervous child's worries. Unfortunately, the last experience, with Dr. Stanfield was quite upsetting. My children had been to see Dr. Ellis 6 months prior for an exam and cleaning with no problems for either of them. During this visit, however, the x-ray films showed what was described to me as "a small cavity between his teeth that required a tiny patch of a filling" I agreed to have it filled that day since we were already there and they had the time. I was ushered to the front desk where they showed me a quote for $600.00 + !!! I was told not to get too worried that my insurance would cover a good portion of that and that my out-of-pocket cost would only be $254.00. I begrudgingly paid them and set off to be with my son. I was told that I should wait in the waiting area, and that it would only be about twenty minutes. although uneasy about not being with him, I acquiesced. Twenty minutes later the hygienist (not the dentist) came out to tell me that there was more damage than they expected and that he would need a root canal and a crown!!! Please keep in mind that my son is 5 years old, and had no problems with that tooth 6 months prior. Red flags went off in my head and I asked what other options there were. The hygienist asked if I would like to speak to the dentist...ummm yes, please! The dentist then showed me the very same x-ray he had when it was described as a small filling that needed a patch and said that he had damage to the pulp and that would require a root canal and a crown. My mommy instinct told me to get him out of there ASAP. I again asked what my options were, and the dentist began telling me that he recommends that I go ahead with the root canal and crown. I told him that I was not asking him what he recommends, I was asking my options. Then, and only then, did they say they could fill it temporarily and I could have it looked at by someone else, BUT they HIGHLY recommend going with the suggested treatment plan. After a lot of back and forth nonsense arguing, they went ahead and filled the cavity. Fast forward to this morning...I took my son to have it looked at by another dentist and they were firm in stating that a root canal and crown were unnecessary, and that they could save the tooth without such extreme measures. They explained that the tooth was at this point infected, and that he would need a pulpotomy which is far less traumatic than a root canal and that there was still plenty of tooth left to fill it instead of giving him a crown. They explained everything from start to finish and never pressured me in any way. The Dr. gave him a prescription for antibiotics to kill the infection and told me that I could come back when the infection was cleared up to do the procedure (which was only going to cost me $107.00 out-of-pocket when all was said and done). I would like to think that a healthcare provider is taking a patient's best interest to heart (ESPECIALLY a child), but all Dr. Stanfield seemed to be looking out for was his wallet.
