  • We were looking for an out of town treat, thinking what better way to celebrate a visit to the Frick? Overall it was a disappointing experience. The tea selection was excellent, and we each enjoyed our selections of Russian Country, Chocolate Mint and Japanese Sensha . One pot fills one teacup full, so it was an effort to constantly flag down our server for more hot water - especially when she only refilled the pot for a three quarter cup serving at a time. The egg salad sandwich was tasty, with a hint of saffron to make it really distinguished. The cucumber sandwich was par for the course. Both the salmon and chicken salad were overwhelmed by too much bread. I prefer my scones light and flaky. The three flavors - berry, lemon poppy and traditional- were cut in wedges and had more of a cake texture. There was only one tablespoon each of jam and cream for three people. Not to worry, the scones were flavorful but way too sweet. That said, the dessert selection was particularly disappointing. The chocolate hazelnut raspberry tart was tasty but way too sweet, as well as the double chocolate fudge brownie. Sugar stole the enjoyment. Then there were two types of cookies - a lemon sugar that tasted like vegetable shortening, and a chocolate chip that I didn't even bother to try. Cookies?? Really??? And not even a traditional shortbread if you take that route? I feel they took obvious shortcuts on quality, and did not live up to a "support local" menu with the Tea service. Resting on the reputation of the Frick, they definitely do not set the standard for a modern Tea service. Fortunately the tea was good quality.
