| - Far from impressive.
I don't mind themed restaurants. If some modicum of effort is put into them and the owners really care, it can be quite charming and will stick in my mind for a long time to come. Gus's Diner did not feel that way to me. It felt like someone told a robot to build a 50's-themed diner, and this was the result. Yeah, it had a certain aesthetic to it that was reminiscent of the 50's, but beyond that it could have been pretty much anything and it wouldn't have made a difference.
Anyways, the booth are a bit obnoxious because each one of them has a large novelty jukebox jutting out from the wall into your space, so what should be a booth that seats 4 turns into a booth that can seat one and a half people on either side. Don't really get the point of this beyond "Haha we are SO 50's in here. Jukeboxes: Remember them?"
Our server wasn't bad, but it looked like many of the others were either highschoolers or perhaps in college, and really didn't have a clue as to how to be effective waitstaff, or maybe they just didn't care. I frequently witnessed several of the girls that clearly had tables to wait on running to the front booth/bar area to roll silverware and chat with their friends. At some point there must have been someone waiting at the entrance for awhile, because I heard an annoyed "Can someone please seat us?!" from behind me, to which a young lady begrudgingly cut her chat session short and walked to the front. Not a good look.
Food was about as boring as the 50's theme. I wasn't terribly hungry, but I was enticed by the thought of getting a chocolate shake and some fries. The shake tasted very syrupy, and after stirring it a bit, it looked like they had indeed just mixed some Hershey's chocolate syrup into vanilla ice cream and gave it to me in a glass half filled with whipped cream. The fries tasted frozen, which isn't too unexpected, but they were bad enough that I'm pretty sure they must have just ordered an economy sized store-brand bag from Costco or something. Limp, tasteless, and they were cold within a minute.
My friend got corned-beef hash. He said it was good, but it too looked like it had been frozen. More corned beef than hash, but I guess you can't complain too much about that. Other friend got soup and a salad, plus fried cheese curds. You really can't screw up soup and salad too easily, but the cheese curds were not great. Also likely frozen, as they were the same bottom-tier cheese curds you can find at almost every single establishment that serves food (save for the few that actually batter and fry them on location).
I can't say I will be back here anytime soon. I'm sure this place will do fine in a sleepy, quiet town like Verona, but for the rest of us, there are better options.
