I love this bakery. The service is a bit "euro style", you should be flagging down the staff to get service. The prices are fair given the superior quality of the food, there are few places that make better custard tarts and "rissóis" in the GTA.
Some reviewers have noted a decline in quality - I have not noticed any such decline. Their food is as good as ever. Maybe the real Portuguese café is too much for some "mange cake" clientele? ;)
In the end, this is not a Canadian café. This is Portuguese all the way. A good majority of the clients are Portuguese speaking, and all their staff speak Portuguese as their first language. As a homesick Portuguese guy, there is no better replacement for a traditional café than Caldense.
Be aggressive (and polite) with the wait staff, flag them down, and let them know if you plan to order more when you first order. They'll just bring you the bill right away if you don't. If you can, bring along someone who speaks Portuguese so they can explain everything to you.
