| - i initially talked to a salesperson, rick. he showed me a really dusty "new" GTI without a sticker. he said the sticker was lost, and i excused the appearance thinking a dust storm blew through. he gave me a price sheet which was higher than the price they listed online. basically msrp. i asked for something a bit more inline with market value, and he got very defensive asking me to back up my numbers. i didnt have anything concrete and commented that he was being a little aggressive. he then started raising his voice accusing me of being uncooperative. it was super awkward.
a sales manager, seth, immediately came out and apologized profusely. seth handed me a another price sheet and said no other dealership would come close to beating them. i walked away to think about it more.
later in the day, the general manager of the dealership, paul, called to apologize for rick's unprofessional behavior. i accepted the apology and thanked him for calling me and giving me a great deal to make up for the incident. i told him i would be in later in the day to take him up on the good deal.
i ended up spending about 4 hours of time finalizing the deal with alan who worked the night shift. alan was very polite and there were no surprises in the paperwork. the price was as stated, and everything looked good. then came the odometer disclosure. it was at 1500 miles which i thought to be odd for a new car. alan explains that the vehicle must have had a lot of "factory testing". alan finishes up all the paperwork, and we walk out to see the car. at first, everything looks ok. we're super excited. then we notice some crusty grime in the cup holder. i ask if the car was used as the manager's vehicle or something of that nature. alan says that isnt the case and that the mileage comes from test drives. but 1500 miles is a lot of mileage, and alan seems to be dodging questions. so i keep pressing as another sales person shows up. after asking these 2 guys 10 different ways about a "new" car having 1500 miles, it's revealed that the car was a customer return. the car was driven for a month, returned, but never titled. so they can technically sell it as a "new" car.
we back out of the deal. it's just shady. they literally flip out the lights and we're left standing in a dark garage. again, super awkward.
thinking back on the experience, there were a lot of things which indicate this is business as usual for these guys. rick, the intial salesperson, apparently had worked there for 5 years. i'm sure he'll be there another 5 years. i dont think treating customers terribly is terribly uncommon. the finance manager at the end of the night was grumbling about another set of customers.
of course the biggest problem was trying to sell a used car as "new" under some technicality. really terrible ethically, and there was no attempt to disclose this information. just multiple attempts to gloss over it and push the deal through. absolutely terrible, these guys should be ashamed of themselves. it was a waste of time and effort, but i hope my experience helps guide people away from this dealership which has a systemic problem of dishonesty and disrespect.
