  • We came here for a birthday dinner last night and enjoyed the experience. It seems like the more casual version of both Lotus of Siam and Arawan next door. It's a small space but decorated nicely. The menus are ridiculously large in both size (they're wooden) and content. They have a separate set of vegetarian pages in the back but most of them are the same dishes as the front with vegetarian meats. Seems like they could consolidate this a bit. First off let me say we over-ordered for three people. But it was really fun trying everything. To start we shared a bowl of tom kha soup with shrimp and the herbal salad. The soup was the best tom kha I've ever had. I usually prefer tom yum because it's not as thick and milky but this tom kha was thinner and full of flavor. I'm going to be craving this soup a lot this winter. The herbal salad was a surprise, also full of flavor. It reminded me a bit of a papaya salad but it was crunchy with cashews and onions. The texture of the tofu was awesome. Very porous and crispy. This is a great starter but if I had to cut down on the ordering the tom kha would win over the salad. For dinner we shared the chicken panang curry, house special duck and chicken pad kee mao. The curry was the best. We ordered a spicy level 7 and it was just enough heat. The sauce wasn't too thick or runny and they give you a good curry-to-rice ratio. The pad kee mao was delicious (huge portion) and the only disappointment was the house special duck. The duck came in a sauce the same consistency as a Chinese sweet and sour.. very gelatinous. The vegetables also felt like a Chinese stir fry: baby corn, snow peas, crinkle cut carrots. The duck was not crispy anymore due to sitting in the sauce so we hardly touched this dish. If something is called "house special" it should be a little more special than this. My only other complaint of Komol is the service. After receiving our food our waitress came back once to refill waters and never returned even though we were there for probably an hour and a half. I'm still a fan of the food though and would return for an intimate dinner that doesn't break the bank like Arawan and Lotus may.
