| - I bought my first Subaru (an Impreza hatchback) used one year ago at CarMax. So I don't have any actual buying experience at this dealership. I came in for repairs on a recent extended warranty notice Subaru sent out. I think it's great that the manufacturer acknowledges the problems that could come up with the CVTs in some of their cars. Subaru's manufacturer warranty is already quite short - 36,000 miles/3 years. The CVT warranty has been extended up to 100,000 miles which is pretty impressive.
Subaru cars apparently stay on the road longer than any other manufacturer's cars out there now. So even the short warranty shouldn't really matter. But my CVT was really giving me trouble. When I called in, the person I talked to on the phone had almost convinced me that I didn't need to bring my car in. I got the impression they weren't happy to have to check cars for this issue. My car is at just over 60k miles now so when I brought it in the service person mentioned the 60k mile service. It comes to $700. Sounds outrageous but it includes a lot of different things. Including a replacement Subaru brand engine air filter for almost $50. FYI, if you know anything about K&N, you can get one of their air filters (the best on the market) and you never have to buy another air filter. Ever. The kicker - it's the same price. Soooo, naturally the dealership will nickel-and-dime you for "quality" manufacturer branded parts.
Putting the above aside, again the tech I talked to was a bit doubtful that my CVT was having a lag issue. Almost hesitantly, he processed it through to check it out. He didn't seem especially happy about the whole extended warranty, insisting that the manufacturer would absolutely be forwarded all of the costs. From my point of view, it's simple customer service. You gotta fix the cars or why would your customer base continue to trust your product?
The wait from arrival until I left was about 2 hours - only a little longer than expected. They determined my car did have a problem and it was fixed free of charge in accordance with the warranty. Seems to be running more smoothly now. They have a TV, snacks, water and coffee in their waiting room. It's very nice and clean with free Wi-Fi which I used to get some work done while I waited. Lots of new cars on display and the sales team is always close by to ask if you've been helped or have any questions. For now, I'm looking forward to my Subaru lasting 10 more years. Maybe by then they'll have another hybrid vehicle or even a full electric I can buy.
