| - Be very skeptical of this establishment if you get your teeth cleaned here. I am a 25-year-old male who takes pretty good care of his mouth, and was told I needed unnecessary and very expensive laser gum treatment at this establishment. See below...
The wait staff/nurses were friendly enough, but that's about the extent of praise I can give this place. I was able to get an appointment 2 days after initially calling, something that should have been a red flag immediately. I told them I hadn't been to the dentist in years (due to a lack of dental insurance) which, in hindsight, may have been a huge mistake. They started out by taking a bunch of x-rays, since I have never been there before, and then proceeded to check me for periodontal disease. I was diagnosed with early periodontitis, which would 'require' very expensive laser gum treatment that wasn't covered by my insurance! The part that really upset me is, when I asked to have a standard tartar cleanup/tooth polishing, as occurs in your typical dental appointment, the secretary replied 'well, you don't need a routine cleaning. You need laser gum treatment, and you NEED IT SOON, we're very concerned about you!'...Yeah, right. I was also charged a $30 co pay for virtually nothing.
Luckily, I decided to have a second, well-respected dentist in Champaign examine my 'early periodontitis' before I dished out that kind of money. I did my homework this time around by talking to some of my coworkers about which dentists they see, and read many reviews online before making my decision about dentist #2. I had to schedule the appointment a month in advance because it was the first available appointment (a good sign, in my opinion). I did not mention that I had been to Hessel Park Family Dentistry a month earlier in July. They performed the same periodontal test on my gums, and told me everything looked great! No mention of periodontitis or cavities. The 2nd dentist never told me that I needed laser gum treatment. I was never even told I have any kind of gingivitis, which precedes periodontitis. I did, however, have a fair amount of tartar build up from not seeing the dentist for a while, which was cleaned away, along with a tooth polishing. I was also not charged a co pay at dentist #2.
In summary, be wary of this place. They will likely try and sell you expensive dental services you do not need. I realize I may have set my self up as an easy target by telling them I hadn't been to the dentist in at least 3 years, but that doesn't justify unethical behavior.
