| - Avis deserve a negative rating...
We rented a full size car from McCarran Airport in Las Vegas that had dents and low pressure on all of the tires per the pressure indicator on the dash board. All the damages were documented prior to checking out of Avis rental parking structure. The light went away after we got on the highway. After two hours of driving, it came back on again. While putting additional air into the tires, I noticed that the two back tires were completely worn out with the steel belt exposed. I then contacted Avis to see what is the procedure to rectify this problem. I was told to drive to the nearest town, which is more than 80 miles away to switch car, so I called them and was told that they are independently own and do not work for Avis. I called Avis back and was told to get the tires replaced and get reimbursed through Avis. Hence, I proceeded to get the tires replaced at the nearest gas station. On my way back, one of the tires in the front went flat due to the same cause-worn out tire from the inside. I had to stop in the middle of the hot desert approximately 50 miles outside of Las Vegas to replace the flat driver side's tire with a spare. The jack that came with the car was bent and did not work. I had to wave down another car to borrow his jack. We now have three bald tires in the trunk with little to no trunk space for our luggage.
Once I got back to Vegas, I took the car with the three damaged tires to Avis and was told by the staff presently at the counter that they are not authorized to reimburse me for the cost of replacing the tires. This is very upsetting. If they are not authorized to allow for reimbursement, then why did they say that I would get reimbursed over the phone. Keep in mind that all this happened while we were on our vacation with a one year old baby. Put yourself into my position, driving with three bad tires with a baby in the middle of the desert. If any of the tire had blown out and cause an accident on the highway, it would cause a possibly a fatality accident. Apparently, none of this matters to your Avis.
We had to abandon one of our destinations since we had to wait for the tires to be replaced at a gas station. Our whole vacation was ruined, not to mention the nerve wrecking of driving a spare tire, hoping and praying that nothing will go wrong with the last original tire. Avis did reimburse me for the tires, but the whole experience was just too much, especially the arguement with Avis's staff when I returned the crappy car.
Lessons learned: 1) Never rent from Avis. 2) Always check the tires of a rental car. 3) Always check the condition of the spare tire, the jack, crow bar, and lug nut special key if it the tires have lock nut.
