| - I found Soulless Performance through a Facebook group for Subarus. I needed to have my motor rebuilt (short block needed replacing). A couple things to note first off - Soulless have moved to a new location that is in Gilbert, not Mesa. Not very far away, but that transition happened during my build and will be meaningful to this review.
Upon first arriving at their shop, I was given a tour and was fairly impressed with the quality of the other cars in the shop. I asked how soon they could begin work, and was told if I dropped the car off, they could analyze what needs to happen and give me some options. I dropped my car off in May. This took about two weeks before we had a plan for what to do with my motor. I wanted to build it up a bit since we were already replacing a bunch of stuff, may as well put better quality stuff in there. We planned on doing a fully built block, and I was given a quote. I was told they wanted to have payment in full, since this was a custom job and they would need to order parts. I paid the agreed upon amount (full built motor, upgraded turbo, FMIC, tune), and then went home to get excited.
A couple weeks later I checked in on how the build was going. It hadn't started. So my daily driver had been sitting there doing nothing for a couple weeks, while I was riding my bike to work. Apparently there were various issues, which continued throughout the rest of the build. Problems with staffing, problems with scheduling, and then on top of it all, moving everything to their new shop, which also had problems getting up and running. I ask how long until I can drive my car again, and the answer is a couple weeks. Well, the answer is always a couple weeks, a couple weeks, a couple weeks... Even stopping by the shop occasionally and seeing varying levels of progress, but it was still taking a while.
Long story short, altogether I was told it would take about two weeks for the entire build and it took roughly 4 months. We finally got the car on the dyno in September (my daily driver, down from May-September). There were a few issues along the way, not having the correct parts, not having all the parts necessary, etc. In the end, I'm about 2400 miles into my newly built motor and I'm very happy with how the car performs. Travis, the owner, is a very knowledgable guy when it comes to Subarus, and is a great guy in general. All things considered, my review should be lower than what it is but I think 4 stars is acceptable - I understand there were a lot of unforseen problems that were out of their control, and I won't hold that against them. They did do what they could, and even sprung some extra work to take care of other things along the way to make up for it. Dustin is a great mechanic and treated my car with care to make sure everything was done correctly.
In the end, I hope the staffing issues get solved, I think the majority of the problems I (and others) experienced was due to a constant flux of office personnel and mechanics. I expect good stuff out of that shop, they are certainly capable of doing good work.
