  • My girlfriend had a recurring set of injuries that resulted two years ago in tearing her spine out from her hips, rendering her unable to stand or walk without significant pain. A friend and former professor in the dance department recommended Jennifer Allen and something called Zero Balancing, which we were told combined structural (mostly skeletal) body work with energy work -- something like massage plus acupressure. We needed to do something fast, because health care (and insurance) moves at such a snail's pace, so my girlfriend went to Jennifer Allen in the hopes that zero balancing might be a stop-gap measure that would return to her some mobility. As it turned out, Jennifer Allen gave her so much more -- not only was my girlfriend able to stand and walk again (I should note that the physical therapist she was able to see eventually contributed!), but Jennifer was also able to enhance her emotional and energetic well-being in short order. So, I decided to go too -- I didn't have any extreme health problems (just the usual compression from sitting in front of a computer for hours at a time), but I was feeling unsettled, scattered, and really, really anxious for the first time in my life, no doubt due to constant work pressure. Hey, I figured, my energy could use a boost. We have both been going almost every two weeks ever since. Zero Balancing, we discovered, gave us room to understand what it is we need -- in mind and body. I know that for me, with each session, it becomes easier for me to find balance again, which is so vital because let's face it, balance is not the nature of the university. Jennifer is herself a wonderful, warm presence -- compassionate, attentive, professional, and friendly. She checks in and personalizes each session according to your needs, both mental and physical. If you wish to be more grounded in order to complete a project (a manuscript, for instance), she calms and centers your energies. If your lower back aches from sitting in front of a computer all day, she can release that tension and "reset" your skeletal structure. (Jennifer also teaches Alexander, which is a technique of re-learning to hold your body in more healthful ways. Also, yoga!) This town can force those of us who are unused to such isolation, or the myriad pressures of being in an atypical university town, to find new ways to make life more sustainable. In this regard, Jennifer Allen is a real treasure!
