Run as fast as you can.
I refinanced my house just last year with my current mortgage lender. First Financial told me exactly what they've told others here--45-60 days. I have excellent credit, and have owned property for 30 years.
The appraisal (done by their contractor) came in $100,000 less than an appraisal done last year in a worse market. Still, I had a lot of equity.
Then comes the stall.
"Sign and date a letter explaining exactly why you receive mail at a post office box."
(Duh.)
"Prove that you do not live in New York."
(Huh?)
"Prove that you do not rent out any part of your house."
(You have my tax returns, Did I claim rental income? You have pictures of my house. Does it look like a lot of people live there? You have my utility bills. Does it look like I'm paying for multiple people?"
And the kicker:
"Because your house was listed for sale 6 months ago, we can't loan you what we promised. You'll need to bring $20K to closing."
(They knew from the start that it had been for sale.)
This is truly a fly-by-night operation. Run, don't walk, away from these people.
So I lost my appraisal fee, but I will try to recoup that in Small Claims Court, since I wouldn't have needed an appraisal if First Financial were honest in the first place.
