| - The weekend is rapidly approaching you and your spouse need a night out but can't find a baby sitter. All you want is to go watch a movie, but with the kids in tow, how do you accomplish?
Easy answer: North York Drive In Theatre.
The above anecdote is taken directly from my childhood as NY-DIT, was always a last minute solution in the summer for my parents, when baby sitters were few and far between. And lets be honest, this family run East Gwillimbury, ON staple is great fun for those group movie nights, and those second or third dates.
Easiest way to find NY-DIT is to take Green Lane road East from Yonge Street in Newmarket (located just north of Upper Canada Mall @ Davis Drive/HWY9 and Yonge), until you come to Mount Albert Road and head North until you either see the signs or the line up of cars waiting to get in.
For those unfamiliar with a Drive-In, movies typically begin at Dusk, with gates opening around 7PM
Admission prices are as follows:
- Adults - $11
- Seniors (65+) - $8
- Children (6 to 12 years) - $2
- Children (5 & under) - Free!
Most nights you get two movies for the price of admission and depending on the night you might score a third!
The concession stands are not to different from your typical movie theatre and the staff is always very friendly and smiling. Best of all the atmosphere at NY-DIT is very relaxed and neighbourly. Some of the best times occurred with friends sitting in lawn chairs laughing and joking prior to the movie (one of the benefits of getting there early aside from getting a good spot).
Two last pointers for anyone who has never been an who is interested:
- This is a cash only establishment. No Visa, ATM or Debit so go prepared.
- Each movie allows you to listen to its audio via FM channel transmitter so no need for a window mounted speaker.
The Drive-In season commences this week (April 27th), and runs until about September/October (weather permitting).
