| - This review is specific to the 7 p.m. "Spring 2018 Review" on Friday, March 9, and addressed to Sharjil Rasool.
Hi Sharjil. I'm the woman you brought up from the audience for your hostage negotiation piece. When you asked for access to a recent text conversation from my phone, I knew what I could be getting into. I'm NOT sure that YOU knew what you could be getting into! See, for better or for worse, I knew the most recent contents of that text thread, and I have to admit, I wanted to see what would happen. Where would you go for comedy?
For the record, you did a GREAT job. You quickly and speedily dodged past things that honestly shouldn't be made fun of, and harvested material that while yes, it may have been personal, was also FUNNY. I just wanted to let you know that I could not be more pleased with the discretion and respect that you showed me, while still doing your piece really, really well.
Using people's text messages in sketch and stand-up is kind of a "thing" these days, and I'm sure that most comics don't do it half as well as you did. I was also really struck by the level of access that doing that form of comedy gives you to other people's stories, and their lives. The audience doesn't have access to the full story of that relationship - but in a way, you do. And I appreciate you holding space for my story.
Best,
Susan
