  • WARNING! Those two smart keys Enterprise forces you to carry are EXPENSIVE to replace! I previously used Enterprise all the time and, usually, have a great experience. That said, Enterprise picked the wrong time to keep sending me emails asking for a review. 1) I was given two keys on an unbreakable cable loop. I was forced to carry two very large, clunky Jeep keys around. The two keys, the tag and the loop were too big to carry in my pocket and I couldn't separate them. If I lost one key, I would have lost both keys. It was very awkward and uncomfortable. 2) I reserved a Jeep Renegade. On my walk to the car, the rep tried to sell me an upgrade for half price. I said No, I preferred to stay with the small SUV. When I arrived at the car, I said again, NO! I want the small SUV I reserved. The rep said "this is the smallest we have". It was a Jeep Compass. At least one class larger than the car I reserved. What exactly were they trying here? They were trying to sell me an upgrade they were forced to give me anyway? 3) The Jeep Compass was TERRIBLE. I drive a Wrangler as my personal car. I know Jeeps. This was a piece of garbage!!!!! It had countless blindspots, labored like a dead mule going up hills (really, you are renting a car that can't get up a hill in the Smokey Mountains???) 4) I did not want a large SUV. I am not used to driving something that long. I was furious that they forced me into a car I didn't feel comfortable in. I had a reservation confirmation for a Renegade or similar. A Compass is 10 inches longer than a Renegade. It is not "similar". I would expect similar to be the same type of car in another line or mfg. All that said, This was a first bad experience for me with Enterprise, so I am giving it another shot. I am renting another Jeep Renegade this weekend, same place. I will let you know how it goes. UPDATE: I returned to Enterprise and rented a Jeep Renegade. I didn't bother "testing" them to see how they would handle the rental, I simply insisted on getting what I reserved and they provided it. That part went fine. But the Renegade used smart keys and once again I was given two keys on an unbreakable metal loop. When I asked if they could be separated so I wouldn't have to carry both, Enterprise refused. (these were VERY large keys. Each one was about the size of an old school Motorola pager). The combined object (2 keys, loop and tag) was too large to fit into a pocket. To add insult, the rental agent added a gender-biased explanation for forcing me to carry the two keys: I can just put them in my pocketbook. Yeah, I always carry a pocketbook while hiking. What this boils down to is that enterprise is too lazy to track and manage keys. They are shifting the burden and liability to the customer (I was told when I dropped off the car that each key costs $250). This is actually a deal breaker for me. I rented cars a for total of 20 days between Aug 22 and May 15 and its my last rental with Enterprise. I can't afford $500 to replace lost keys they are forcing me to carry against my wishes. I'm dropping my rating because of the significant financial risk they impose on the customer without any notification! Update2: Enterprise in other locations does not do the thing with both keys. I haven't seen it happen since last year. (I tried Hertz because of THIS experience, but that was far worse)
