| - I went to Il Mulino on Veteran's Day, which is also my Birthday. Things started out pretty rough. I went by the restaurant for a recon two days prior to see if it lived up to its reputation for atmosphere and décor (it did). I also took this opportunity to ask one of the waiters questions that I did not want to ask at the table in front of my guests, which was beneficial. But when I told the girl I wanted a reservation for 4 on Veteran's Day, she said she didn't know when Veteran's Day was. To say I was not pleased is an understatement; I went from 0 to 60 in about 2 seconds. But my wife hit me and told me not to make a scene and make the reservation. I am glad she hit me and I'm glad I made the reservation.
The meal was one of the best I have ever had. Service was impeccable, staff was friendly and the Captain made us feel at home. We ordered some of the specials and some off the menu. It should be noted that Mulino's has what I assume is a pretty set group of specials they offer every night, which are not on the menu. They don't tell you the prices unless you ask, which can be embarrassing. All are a little pricy, but not out of line.
We had an eggplant and crab dish for appetizer along with some buffalo cheese, Italian meat and tomatoes. Both were delicious. The two ladies each had a fish dish, one was a fish cooked in rock salt, the other I forget. The men both had meat. My friend a steak (that you could cut with a fork) and I had a chicken dish. All were delicious. They gave me a special dessert for free because of my birthday.
One of the most impressive things about the restaurant - or at least about our Service Captain (Raul') ,- is that he stopped us from ordering too much food. He could have easily made another $125.00 had he said nothing and just let us order. But it would have been WAY too much food. And he told us that. He even recommended we split the side dishes.
One thing to be careful of.....Italians have an after dinner aperitif that they will tell you "cleanses you digestive system." Well, it cleanses a LOT more than that. Baby, that is one STRONG DRINK. I had one made out of pears; I mean after all, how strong could something made out of pears be??? I forget what everyone else had. Then Raul' insisted I have some Italian brandy (or something) he brought around in a copper tub. He called in "Italian Moonshine" and that it was "special" and was free to me because of Veteran's Day. DEAR GOD!!! I could barely find the door!!!
A wonderful night. Great food made even better by a great staff.
NOTE: The bill comes with two places to leave a tip, which I had never seen before. One place is for the "Captain" and the other is for "Service." They don't tell you what to do unless you ask, which is embarrassing. But the "Service" tip is where you give your standard "tip" of whatever you want to give. The "Captain" tip is an extra amount that just goes to the table captain for outstanding service. So if you do it like you are supposed to, your total tip could be as much as 30% of your meal cost. It's up to you.
