I think I'm in love...
I think that I'm possibly one of the first to even walk in the place as they've just opened for the first time about 10 min ago. The set up is lovely. Just a waiting space and a window with an uncluttered display of the doughnut offerings of the day - about a half dozen varieties. I select the Strawberry Jammy by itself though they do offer a selection of coffee as well. The staff are outfitted in a modern take on 50's soda jerk gear complete with grey flannel bow ties and winning smiles. Fun but not over the top for those of us who aren't as social at 7:10am.
I'm told that the chicken part of Paulette's starts at 11 - so, maybe I'll come back later because I've been severly deep-fried chicken deprived lately.
So the dounught, almost ufo saucer like in shape with a crispy golden brown exterior - thankfully moderate in size (not a mammoth giant but more the palm of your hand). Biting in at first my mouth was dissapointed - where was the jam smearing my face and falling out the bottom? Then I realized, my gawd this is an Actual Doughnut, not one of those crappy confections that my poor mouth had been settled on for years. The jam is a light pink (anyone who makes actual strawberry jam knows the dayglow red that you usally find in the middle of things is not only unnatural but improbabale) and instead of being a glob injected at the end of the baking process - the stuff is judicicily applied around the rim of the doughnut and a tiny but not globby pocket in the centre.
Its lovely, but not overly sweet.
In no way does this doughnut have any relation to a Timmies or Coffee Time doughnut other than at one time each was in contact with flour. At $2.75 its more than the $.95 offerings around town but its size, quality, and taste is comparable to a loaf or large gourmet muffin so the price should not be balked at. Its a satisfying treat and I can't wait to try their chicken as well.
