  • Since I live less than a half mile away, I've seen a lot of Asiana's ups and downs over the past few years. Lately, things are much improved over times past (surely, shiny, new competitor LF on Bell opening up created some incentive). Overall, me likee. The non-food aisle is great fun to explore, with everything from kitchen gadgets, knives, pots & pans, more shapes and sizes of ice cube trays than you've probably seen in one place, and who even knows what this thing is supposed to be used for?! This is where I purchased my lawnmower. Okay, so it's really a rough-cast 8' steelbladed sickle on a wooden handle; mow and edge your entire front lawn with one and watch your neighborly interactions quickly achieve great improvements! (My step-dad may have been certifiable, but tthat doesn't mean I didn't learn a useful thing or two from him. One dirty pearl of wisdom I'll pass on to you from his philosophy, is that unless you're talking about tthe kids & neighborhood you grew up with, the best possible relationship you can ever hope to have with your adult neighbors is one of "leaving each other the ?#ยข% alone", and hand-mowing your lawn with an 8' sickle pretty much establishes this for you. You need a collander and tub to wash some greens? They have pint-sized all the way up to give-your-75lb-dog-a-bath-sized, in plastic or stainless steel. Hey, no Asian/dog jokes -- nearly half the store and customers are eastern European or Indian. But speaking of dogs, I used to get mine fresh fish from the butcher area once a week but not so much anymore. They've revamped that area of the store so that the mongers are still there cutting and gutting the day's seafood & other meats, but they do it behind a tall barrier, package the results on plastic-wrapped foam trays, tag and shelve it. No more customer interaction, which is to me a big disappointment. I had preferred to feed my beasts a less processed fish than most humans want for themselves, but no longer have a choice. Also sad about discontinuation of the sale of salmon heads, which I know was very popular for a lot of other customers. (Perfect meat:bone ratio for raw-fed dogs, and apparently for soup-fed people, and was only 99c/lb.) Other treats like chickenfeet or pigsfeet are actually more expensive here than western grocery stores, because they're more popular for regular use., not considered scrap. I know of no place else in the immediate area that a person so inclined could purchase a skinned, whole frozen sheep's head. Good to know, in case neighborly relations need some additional fine-tuning. Produce is pretty good here - very reasonably priced for most items, and much variety. Sure, they're less picky about "ugly" fruits and veggies, causing you to pick and choose a bit to find the better specimens, but I do that anyway at any other store's pyramid piles of so called Perfect looking produce, don't you? (Besides, ugly pieces are more likely to have fully ripened prior to being harvested, so taste better than the prematurely plucked alternative.) My favorites are their ever-present stock of both pickling and Persian cucumbers, and the tasty, tiny red or white potatoes, loose, not hidden in a tinted bag, for 69c/lb. I may never know what 75% of this store even is, but I like it's funky personality, and yes, it's funky scent, too.
