rev:text	Factory tours of all types are cool. Factory tours of all types are even cooler when they're free. Factory tours are the best when they're free plus offer free samples. With that simple logic it's easy to see why the Herr's tour is a five star no brainer. Others have explained the process in great detail and nothing has changed. It's still the ten minute cheesy beyond belief company propaganda video after which leads to the tour where you first see pretzels, then tortilla chips, then the warehouse and finally it's all about the chip production areas before being cut loose with your two free sample bags into the gift shop to of course, buy more chips. A few notes about the tour and a few corrections that need to be made regarding information in other reviews: * While Herr's may have started out as a Mid-Atlantic favorite nearly seventy years ago their reach now far exceeds that as Herr's is now sold in 40 states plus they have an international presence as well. * The Nottingham PA factory does not make everything as they do have an additional facility in Ohio although that one is not available for tours just like the building in Nottingham which handles the cheese curl line for Herr's is also not available for tours. * More than likely after you take the tour you're not going to be getting any bags of regular Herr's chips. The guide told our group that Herr's usually tries to push products that are either new or maybe not doing as well as the company would like. We got regular Kettle Chips (yick!) and the Veggie Chips (half-Yick!). * As others have mentioned it is amazing to see in certain areas how few people it takes to actually allow the process to unfold. It's more or less all computers and machines with two exceptions. The warehouse of course and in the packaging area as all Herr's products that are packed in a round cylinder (in particular the pretzel rods) are all done by hand as no machine can pack the cylinder without destroying a fairly high percentage of the containers which is why humans are still present. * The gift shop has a wide array of the Herr's line including the infamous "Ooops" rack where things are sold at the very least 50% off and items like the one ounce bags can go for as little as 17 cents a piece. The gift shop is open Monday-Friday from 8-5 and you don't need to be there for a tour to stop by and get your grease on. * Tours are split up where certain time slots are held only for groups and other slots are only held for non-groups. All reservations are either done online or by calling 1-800-63-SNACK. In theory you probably could do a walk up tour but you would be taking a gamble that the tour isn't already sold out. The tour we took last Wednesday only had eight people on it but the guide said that it was highly irregular as most Monday-Wednesday tours do sell out in advance. The reason why I mentioned Monday-Wednesday is because those are the only days you are guaranteed to see any live production happening as they do not operate every Thursday or Friday. Seeing as the highlight of the tour is getting a handful of fresh chips right off the line I'm not sure how they work that if let's say your show up on a Friday and there's no production that day and you're tour consists of watching video screens of the process versus the actual process? * The amount of products which Herr's produces is truly staggering. Party Mix Veggie Crisps Cinnamon Churros Pork Rinds Waffle disc cut chips with a filling Potato Stix Puff'n Corn Popcorn in multiple favors Corn & Tortilla chips in multiple flavors Pretzels in multiple cuts and flavors Kettle chips in multiple flavors Baked Crisps in multiple flavors Cheese curls and cheesetix in multiple favors There's more but that's a good enough idea. No supermarket is going to carry all of this so if there's something you want but can't find Herr's makes it easy as you can order a lot of their products via their website by the case including newer chip flavors like Fire Roasted Corn or Peppered Bacon. Sure the factory is kind of in the middle of nowhere but it's free and it's awesome to see the operation from front to back with the chance to buy some of the product at a healthy discount which doesn't hurt either.
