  • My most recommendable activity to anyone in Arizona, and still one of the best bangs for the buck. My first time was July 13, 1988 and not much has changed other than a jump in price from $5 to $17, and a fence keeping people jumping of the bridge, and now Axl Rose is bloated and looks like Kathleen Turner. Half of the fun is the scary bus ride, with all the seats facing the middle, jammed in between piles of fat innertubes, speeding up and down the hilly desert road to the drop. The other half is just chillin' in the tube, waiting for those two or three moments of "rapids" in which you have to raise your butt to avoid hitting the rocks. Things I've learned along the way: Flip-flops make great paddles, but you're screwed if they break. The desert is no place to be barefoot. Every step is like walking on asphalt with burrs and pebbles, or Nature's Legos. Everyone knows to apply sunscreen, but you MUST NOT miss a single spot, so apply it evenly: those little lines you miss will get burned, and you will clearly see the small slivers of skin you missed because, like a paper full of errors, you with be marked in red. Some days the river ran so slow you could go backwards. Other days it ran so fast, you could make multiple trips a day. So, check the flow if speed is important to you. My favorite is going from 1 to 2, getting out, and then going again. The long way has some nice scenery and a "show me your boobs" corner (nice scenery for some, but I'm shy) and jumping rock, but the trip is very long. Hours long. It's a commitment I've only done three times. A sheet wrapped around your tube will keep it cooler, less sticky, and can help identify your tube. Bring marshmallows to throw at people. They're biodegradable, and don't hurt. If you are getting out at Stop 2 (which I recommend), make sure your weaker, slower, drunker friends start moving toward the right once you see the bridge. Don't bring anything you don't mind losing. Here's a social experiment that I have named "The River Roar": For no reason at all: just "WOOOOOO!" and soon the whole river will do the same. Every time. RIVER ROAR! Stinkiest outhouse in the country. It smells like a poo getting a home perm.
