  • World Health... why? Why do you gotta go being like that? Why? Like what? Like... all friendly and upbeat and helpful. Seriously, what's up with that? For real though, this company gets slammed sometimes where it doesn't actually deserve to be slammed. Gyms in general have had a bad rep for awhile and, minus the sales process when you first sign up, it's a gym I'm enjoying being a member of. First off, sorry Macleod Trail. I'm cheating on you. Sunridge is less of a hassle to get to and there's more parking because it's in a mall. Thank goodness my membership came with access to 5 of your clubs. Secondly, the first time I ever showed up at Sunridge, I asked the gal at the front desk where the changing rooms were. One of the staff was on her way in and popped over, "Oh I can show you where those are!" And every time I leave, whoever's at the front desk shouts a "bye!" on my way out the door. And it's not just me. The next time, and the time after that, and the time after that, at least one trainer walked through the cardio area giving each person an encouraging high five. Today, I popped on the stair climber. The high fiver from earlier was walking by, stopped and said, "Have you tried the other machine over there?" He pointed to the ones that looked like a moving staircase. No, I hadn't. "Stop this workout right now. Let me show you how they work. It's way more fun and you'll never come back to this machine afterwards." Virtual workouts, hikes through different terrains showing up on your screen... I mean, it's not quite like being in Switzerland, but it's better than staring ahead trying to convince myself to do another 5 minutes on the stair climber. It even comes with little facts about the supposed hike I'm on that scroll across the top of the screen every few minutes. He's right, I won't go back to the boring stair climber. I signed up only on a promo that waived the $200 signup fee and guaranteed me no contract. I've had my own issues with gyms and contracts and early cancellation fees in the past, so I'm wary too. I also had my own prejudices about the personal trainer types... really, it was a reflection of how many judgments I held against myself about how I should look vs. how I do. Well... goodbye judgments. Seriously, they're so damned friendly! And helpful. And congratulatory. And on your side. All of them. Not just one or two. ALL OF THEM. If you can manoeuvre your way through the initial, "Hey! Welcome to the club! Let's get you signed up with a trainer or a group fitness session or something else!" pitches, you get to the part of coming to the gym that's fun. If you want it, cool. If not, just stand your ground. Ask your questions and assume its the trainer's job to also get you to sign up for more than just the basic membership. Take your time. Get to know some of the other trainers. You might relate to one better than the other. If the gym hasn't been on your radar for years, you might want to do what I do first and just get in the habit of going. That's a big enough goal for me at the moment. But then again, I'm after some long lasting lifestyle changes. Going to the gym first. Personal training later. See you at the water cooler!
