  • I wanted so badly to love the science center. As someone who has worked as a science educator, and who specifically looks up science museums as points of interest when traveling, I was sure I would love this place. I was wrong. For one thing, it is incredibly expensive. And I'm not someone who complains about the price of tomatoes. I don't mind paying more money for quality or a great experience; this place just doesn't cut it. The only reason I came here so much when my daughter was younger is because her father worked at a different museum and they have a program whereby museum workers (and their guests) can get into other museums for free. Once that was over I stopped coming. First, the good: There is a fun room (rather large) that teaches about the human body, where kids can run around, which has an intestine slide for little kids that farts when you go down it, and other organ/body models. This is the best part of the museum. I am also a fan of the platform where you stand and feel different weather conditions (heat, wind, rain) while large TVs play a little film about natural disasters. The outdoor area where kids throw plastic balls into fountains and watch as they travel on tracks and streams of water is obviously fun for kids (although no attempt to explain scientific principles exists here). Now, the bad: There is a section of the museum that is all about plumbing and insulation? I mean, maybe this is tied to the museums corporate sponsors but... come on. It is beyond boring, and throwing a little kids playhouse and some pool noodles and foam blocks inside does little to make it more exciting. The planetarium shows are actually pretty good (the ones I have seen about outer space), but tack on an extra $9 per person to see. The shows are like half an hour long, are you kidding me? The last time I came was to see a shark exhibit a couple of years ago. There was no option to pay for the shark exhibit alone; we had to pay the normal (expensive) fee to get in and the extra charge for the special exhibit. For a family of 3 (2 adults and a young child) we paid $85. And the shark exhibit was... ok, but kind of small. I had been to a much bigger shark exhibit at another museum for a fraction of the price. I said I would never be back after that experience, and I won't.
