  • We had booked reservations about a month in advance. When we got to the Jun Jun Hotel there was no one to be found. Luckily we read the reviews on Yelp and other places before coming and learned that others also came across this at times and simply called the owner who quickly came. However, when we did this he did not come quickly. 20 minutes later we called again. By the way he spoke it seemed as if he never left the first time, but he came soon afterwards. During both calls he was confused as to why we were there as he was not expecting us and stated many times that we did not have a reservation, acting like we were inconveniencing him by making him come down to his own hotel. Additionally, he stated that he had no available rooms because he was not expecting anyone. Coming all the way from NYC we were very disappointed, tired, and pissed. After getting stern with him and showing him proof of our reservation and a period of arguing he said that he did have a room after all... He said he needed 2 hours to have it ready as it was dirty from a "previous customer." I was and still am ticked off that we had to prove to the owner that we had a reservation and already partially paid. 2 hours later we returned and it was obvious that the room was he and his wife's spare room for when they want to stay at the hotel. The owner showed us the room but stated that he still needed to clean out the fridge. Inside the mini fridge was what looked like tons and tons of food that have been marinating in smelly rotting juices for centuries. It was obvious that it was their leftover/snack storage fridge that was hardly ever opened. It continued to be hardly ever opened during our stay as whenever we did open it the room was flooded with the disgusting rotten smell. The sheets were somewhat damp and smelled very musty and mildewy with hints of chinese herbal joint medicine ointment. There were many cigarette burns also. It seemed as if the sheets had not been washed for a very long time. I think they did not wash them before we entered because they did not sleep in the bed and just laid on top of the blankets so they thought it didn't need to be washed. Boy were they wrong. The toilet made sounds as if animals were dying every time it was flushed and had clogged up issues. But this was to be expected as the Jun Jun Hotel is really an upscale hostel, something we already knew and were expecting before we came. Hostels shouldn't have mildewy damp sheets and fridges that smell like rotting corpses however....especially nicer ones that try to pretend they're hotels. Despite all this, the location is fantastic. It is right near Kensington market and chinatown and not a far walk form many other interesting neighborhoods and restaurants. This factor almost makes me want to give them 2 stars. The sushi restaurant below is boarded up and not running so don't expect a coupon for it as is advertised on the hotel's website or on studentuniverse.com
