| - HAPPY HOUR SHAMING + well... other lame stuff.
I brought 14 people in for an after-matinee bite. We hadn't been to Roaring Fork before. After an unpleasant evening, we likely won't come again.
1) Let's start with the headline: happy hour shaming. That's when restaurants put the happy hour people in a little "ghetto" all of their own. RF has mostly round tables in their little happy hour ghetto area so we all had to split up and sit on opposite sides of the room. What with drinks and food we'd easily be spending around $400 during happy hour between the 14 of us (two of us spent $60, not even counting drinks). I went up to a manager and asked if they could find us a table where we could all sit together. The guy nearly scoffed like I should know better: NO. Ok, fine. Be that way -- see if we come back. It's bad enough they segregate the happy hour people to the right of the entrance (away from the rest of the place), but to look me in the eye with our group spending $400-$500 on just appetizers and drinks and not lift a pinky to help us commune... there are too many other places that would accommodate a request like that. Had we been able to all sit together or at least near each other, we may have ordered dinner plates in addition to the app's. But isolated from each other like that was a buzz kill and I could tell everyone wanted in and out fast.
2) L.A. ATTITUDE in cow town. Hey, I always enjoyed how Arizona was the antidote to L.A., my hometown. But Roaring Fork, don't try to cop an attitude. You don't know attitude. You're a pale comparison to real "it" restaurants in L.A., Brentwood and Santa Monica. I hate pretension. That manager was oozing it. There are too many other great restaurants in the PHX that we can go to where they don't cop an attitude.
3) NO HAPPY HOUR PRICES. So, I got my hands on a regular menu and noted that many of the happy hour prices were a mere $1 lower than the same item on the dinner menu. When I ordered my fish tacos, the server asked if I wanted the dinner-sized tacos or the happy hour sized tacos... What?? You downsize the appetizers for happy hour? If you get less food and the price is only a buck or two lower, how is that a deal?
4) Separate Check Fiasco. Someone in our group told the waiter they were covering all of our dinners. Then, as if it wasn't bad enough that we were stuck in a ghetto and had to sit at all four corners of our little segregated area, they embarrassed us by bringing everyone separate checks. You know how annoying separate checks are... everyone hates them and they often violate decorum. Here our host had specifically asked for one bill to be brought to them and the server came out with something like 6 separate checks for us.
5) Worst Brussel Sprouts in History. All gastropubs and trendy spots serve Brussel Sprouts these days. These were the worst I'd ever tasted. They were sliced and nearly raw, then oversalted. Just tasteless. Why bother.
6) Limited Happy Hour Menu. Not much here. Nothing else to say.
If it isn't obvious, we were all underwhelmed. First impressions mean everything. If you want to be shamed, inconvenienced and talked down to along with being teased with happy hour pricing that doesn't materialize, all in the same night, maybe Roaring Fork *is* for you.
Oh yeah, and getting into the parking lot really sucks.
