  • What's the opposite of recommend? Cuz that's what I'm doing, and STRONGLY. I understand that leather care is not cheap, and I don't know whether Toronto has many other options, but here you pay an arm and a leg for TERRIBLE service. Cory "the guy" Bernatt is not one bit personable. His weekend guy is more pleasant, but is not authorized to do much for you. My ordeal began a while back with a GORGEOUS buttery-soft elephant-grey bag from Roots, on which a little stitching had come loose, and I wanted the strap shortened. While inspecting the comely bag, Cory bragged about how he and the Roots founder/owner/whatever were buddies who did yoga together. Well, if he and Roots guy were so tight, you'd think Cory might have mentioned that Roots would do this job FOR FREE. I only found that out on my own after paying Cory a $40 deposit (DEPOSIT! So think how much the job would cost) but before they'd started the work, so I wanted to cancel the job and get my bag back. But no, Cory would not give me a refund, only a store credit. Useful, huh? Considering how often one needs leather care in a lifetime. I had no desire to ever go back, except now he had my 40 bucks. So, fast forward to 6 weeks ago. The bag had been faithfully serving for over a year and deserved some TLC, so I took it in to get cleaned, to use up my credit. Except my credit only amounted to again, a small deposit on the cost of the cleaning, which is not done in-house but sent away to a specialized dry cleaner. But fine. I handed it over and it was supposed to be ready in 2 weeks. That was 6 weeks, and several phone calls, ago. Today I finally picked up the bag, and I could cry. Granted, Cory had told me that there was some risk involved in dry-cleaning leather, but he did not tell me that what I would get back would be a faded, beige, dried-out husk of the bag I'd brought him. I did get a $15 discount for the delay, but that's less than half the value of the products they tried to sell me so that I could spend the next 2 weeks reconditioning the bag myself. I wish I had just let him keep the 40 bucks.
