| - My elderly parents, along with a large number of other elderly people, live in a Toronto building which has only one elevator. It is an Otis elevator, which was refurbished a few years ago. This process took Otis 9 weeks, during which time my parents couldn't live in the building since they are on the 11th floor and could not possibly go up and down the stairs. Ever since it was updated, despite a mechanic apparently doing monthly checks, the elevator has been experiencing regular problems, each of which was causing it to be out of service for extended periods of time. The last breakdown happened 24 hours ago. Yesterday, my mother needed to go to the doctor for an appointment, but could not as she is not able to walk down the stairs. I called Otis to find out the ETA for a mechanic and they said that while a mechanic has been paged, they have no idea when he is going to be available. Really?! In the 21st century, a corporation as large as Otis, has no clue as to where its mechanics are, nor how long it is going to take them to get to a job?! The property management company also told me that if a part needs to be ordered from overseas, the elevator could be out of service for weeks. Essentially, old people are being held hostage in a single elevator building due to Otis' gross negligence and incompetence. This company does not deserve one star.
