  • Horrible place. Friend choked on a piece of meat while on vacation in Vegas. Ambulance took him to this hell hole. Had it still lodged in this throat. This was at 6pm. Kept him in the ER until 6am, when they transferred him to a private room (I suspect so they could charge for it), then an hour later took him to surgery finally. Seriously, over 12 hours with a piece of meat stuck in his throat, gagging, choking, and turning blue. His local doctor said his throat looked like a cat had been drug out of it when we got home. Any kind of reputable hospital has staff on call to take care of things like this right away, but not this one. They said that they could not do anything until morning when the surgeons came in. When the surgeon arrived, a nurse told him that my friend was going into distress, and he needed prompt attention. Surgeon actually said to her "don't blame me for what didn't get done last night". That was just the beginning of the nightmare. Next comes the billing. My friend has Cadillac insurance. I mean the kind where he pays $1 for ANY prescription. He has never had to pay out of pocket for anything in the many years he has had this insurance though his union. Well think again. This hospital overcharges so drastically that insurance companies will not pay the ridiculous amounts. Bill upon bills kept rolling in. $497 for a Prilosec pill that I am pretty certain he never took because he couldn't even swallow water. They did a biopsy of his stomach for no reason at all (remember, simple choking on piece of meat, still stuck in his throat), and without asking. Because they did the biopsy, they billed twice for everything, including anesthesia, etc. After the insurance and union lawyers fought with them for 2 years, they finally gave up and my friend ended up paying all of the left overs that any normal hospital would have written off. Both the insurance and union lawyers said they had never dealt with an organization that was so rude and uncooperative. They actually will hang up on you rather than discuss the billing. Not only that, but he overpaid, and still was turned into collections. When he called collections (actually a branch of the hospital) they said it was his problem to get the money back, and good luck with it. After talking with local friends, ALL of them said they would never go to this hospital, and recommended several others. It would have been cheaper and faster to have flown home and had it removed.
