| - Shortly before Christmas, my partner and I decided to get away from the crowds at the north end of Gilbert Rd. and dine at Romeos Euro Cafe. There was no wait, and we immediately seated at a cozy table near the window. The ambiance in the restaurant is quaint, and the decor is inviting. The server was prompt and attentive.
My partner order a dish that came with mashed potatoes. When he asked for butter, the server told him there would be a charge of 50 cents for butter. At first, we thought he was joking. Once we realized he was serious, we asked to speak to the manager about the butter charge, and she confirmed that we would have to pay 50 cents for butter to apply on the mashed potatoes or bread that came with the meal. When we pointed out that our meals came up to $64, and they would be losing 2 customers over 50 cents, she was not concerned, and maintained that they needed to charge the fee for butter. I ordered a pasta and shrimp dish, which was bland.
I stopped going to Euro Cafe when it was on Longmore, in Mesa, because of the chef's refusal to modify dishes by omitting cheese, and now I will no longer go to this restaurant because of a ridiculous charge for butter. If you go, BYOB- bring your own butter.
