| - This place can be packed, and you may very well wait 45 minutes for a table some nights. The hosts and hostesses are friendly, and the servers provide good service, in general. Although, I'm not usually "wow-ed" when I come to Great Dane.
The fried fish that goes into the fish tacos is mediocre. The BBQ "salsa" for that dish is also a bit odd. The salmon burger is always a winner, though, and the caper aioli is really tasty. I understand this is a place that brews their own beer, but I didn't expect the cocktail menu to be essentially non-existent and for the moscow mule to be just "eh" that I took baby sips from the whole meal. The one appetizer that does wow me here is the Mediterranean plate.
I think this place is a staple, both the Hilldale and downtown locations, in Madison because it is always decent and has a good selection. I wouldn't go out of my way necessarily to eat at the Dane, but it's always a convenient option when I'm near Hilldale or seeing a show downtown and wanting to grab food and a drink beforehand.
The parking is a bit weird here too. The spots to the west of the restaurant state that it's reserved for the bank, but that leaves a few street parking spots and the parking garage. I've parked in the lot almost every time and never had any issues with getting a ticket...
