| - Having grown up experiencing some of the best that San Francisco has to offer in terms of food, I am definitely picky about where I will go to pay for a meal. Thankfully my high expectations were not only met but exceeded when I stumbled upon Republic Ramen. After much though, I decided to order the Shrimp Tempura Udon noodles. After a short wait time, the udon was brought out to me along with the noodles, Naruto, and tempura all packaged in separate containers. I absolutely love it when restaurants take the extra effort to package the foods separately as not to let the food get too soggy too quickly. Albeit there is an environmental concern with all the extra plastic. However, I am here to judge the food, not the restaurant's impact on the world. The broth was full of flavor and warming, exactly what I look for when ordering Udon. The saltiness was perfectly balanced and not overbearing. Onions, scallions, spinach, and seaweed were all fresh and delicious. My only small disappointment was the crunchiness of the tempura, as it was a little soft. This was made up for with the vast tea selection they had available for purchase.
For such great food, the pricing was incredibly reasonable. I ended up paying no more than $11 for a filling, healthy, and extremely flavorful meal. While I have definitely been to cheaper Ramen houses, I could understand the pricing due to Arizona's land locked status. Obviously the shipping cost becomes a factor for any restaurant that wants to serve quality sea food to desert dwellers.
The ambience of the establishment was also very relaxing and welcoming. The rooms are all lit with a soft and dim lighting. Decorations you would expect to find in ramen houses adorn the walls and ceilings. The tables and chairs were all quality made and comfortable to sit on. In addition, there was a seating area for when one was waiting for their food to be cooked (if one was doing take-out instead of dining in).
The atmosphere was inviting. The light smell of ramen and udon broth filled the room, strong enough to make entice one's appetite yet subtle enough to be pleasant. Music also played in the background of the normal restaurant noise. I came at a relatively busy time (in the later afternoon) so I was greeted with a the warm noise of restaurant chatter and conversation. Overall it was a enjoyable area to dine.
Last but certainly not least was the service. I was greeting by a smiling cashier. Since it was my first time at Republic Ramen I asked for the cashier's recommendations. She went above and beyond by explaining her favorite different types of Udon and Ramen. Once I had ordered my food I took a number and then sat down at one of the tables. My food was promptly brought out to me and the runner thanked me for coming and let me know he hoped I enjoyed the food.
