  • Dealing with a very sore throat I decided to drown my symptoms with some of the goodies here. For a long time I suspected that the owner was Eliza Bowman whom I remembered from Eliza's Oven in the now defunct Pittsburgh Public Market down in the Strip district. When I arrived and saw her I was right! She told me that she was finally able to acquire her own storefront here on Reynolds St and has been able to expand her pastries and desserts now that she has more room. She still specializes in cupcakes and filled cookies. Now you can order various breads made with various boozes including rum. She also sells pies, cakes, and breakfast pastries. There are a few things you can purchase that do not have added liquor. Normally it melts in the cooking process. She is also taking Thanksgiving orders for various boozy pies at very reasonable prices. In addition to fresh breads she has a section where you can get day old bread for half price. She told me it was just as good as the fresh and I could easily freeze what I don't want at the present time. She cannot slice your bread for you since she does not have the apparatus to cut it evenly. She suggested I cut it in half, wrap the half I don't need for now and keep it in the freezer and cut the rest up and store in the refrigerator. The bread will last a week in the refrigerator. I took a day old rye bread which was only $3.00. Fresh loaves usually cost $6.00. For my goodies I purchased two cupcakes-one has a chocolate chip cookie at the bottom with vanilla icing and the other a pumpkin rum. For my "cookies" I purchased the most popular seasonal item she had. It was pumpkin beer spice cookies with purple cream on the inside. For just under $2.00 this cookie was to die for!!! I regretted that I only bought one but good reason to come back! Yes, she still wraps those cookies in plastic wrap and bow ties it. I noticed that she was selling ginger ale or root beer soda from Barmy soda company located at East End brewing company on Penn Ave. You can either buy the whole chilled bottle or get a glass. I settled for the latter since I had errands to do. She told me they really spice it up with the ginger. She has a small seating area where I was able to enjoy it and boy did that ever help my throat! She also has a freezer where you can take home frozen items to heat up yourself. When I got home I cut off a piece of the bread and there was nothing extraordinary about it except it was dense! If you want coffee she gets it from Commonplace coffee that has various locations around the city. She also does catering for special events Her shop is located on Reynolds St in Point Breeze not far from the Frick museum. Street parking is available. Cakes are sold by the slice and believe me they are very tempting. You can order ahead as well. It was a touching memory to see that she brought her "old oven" that she had in the Public market for display. Welcome back Eliza! Looking forward to trying out some of her scones and breakfast pastries on my next visit.
