  • Under construction. That's the sign you practically see everywhere when it comes to some of Pittsburgh's bridges and tunnels. Unfortunately they schedule them sometime that it interferes with a major or holiday weekend and further complicates traffic. So let me start by telling you where this check in is located. It is near the entrance of the Squirrel Hill tunnel. Nearby the Greenfield bridge has been demolished and they are in the process of building a new one. Also adding to the construction list is the Liberty Bridge as well as the Birmingham bridge. Sometimes the bridge or tunnel itself is not under construction by the approaches to it are. Case in point. The Fort Pitt bridge. The Parkway West leading to and from it has had numerous outbound and inbound closures. Although most of these closures occur during evenings and weekends still it makes it hard to find suitable detours without waiting hours to get where you are going. The same is happening as you exit the West End bridge if you want to head to the North Hills. Now they have reopened part of the exit ramp but you need to be able to zoom to merge with the traffic coming in from I 65. On a positive note they did bore a tunnel through the West End circle making it a straight shot from the bridge to get onto Route 51. The bridges and tunnels are unique in their own way. The three bridges headed to the North Side offer great views of the ballparks. Keep in mind however, that if the Pirates have a home game they close the Roberto Clemente bridge for pedestrian access only. Pittsburgh does have a lot of fine bridges and tunnels but it will be nicer to see those horrid orange signs disappear.
