"The few times that I have been in the area, I have visited The Book Exchange (reviewed separately, also 3-stars) first, then I go next-door to Dencan Books, and the two places are opposites in every way. Book Exchange is a small organized place to find a good quality book, while Dencan's is a big mess with all kinds of bargains waiting to be unearthed if you're not too picky about condition.\n\nThe first thing that you notice, even from outside, is that the store is crammed with books everywhere, even the front window display a jumble. Right near the door is the general literature section, which covers a few shelving units along the wall, then more books along the aisle for specific authors or countries. I was pleasantly surprised that there are almost 2 shelves of Russian literature (in translation). The downside is that the condition of these largely paperback books varies greatly; some are okay while others are badly worn or have some degree of damage, although nothing too severe. As you go deeper into the store, it only gets more disorganized. There is a decent sci-fi section, with a few older hardcovers, mostly in decent condition, but you literally have to step over piles of books to get there. There are a few aisles that I have walked down where I am not even sure what the section is, as books of varying topics sit on the same shelf. There is a section near the back that has history and other social science topics, and a pretty good section for music and entertainment. The last time I was there, there are even a dozen boxes of LPs near the music books, but again their condition varies and there is no organization.\n\nOn the plus side, the prices are low and generally match the condition. It also seems that everything is always on sale. The owner is always around talking to customers, and I think he has told me every time that most books are reduced from whatever the written price says. Overall, a good place to go if you have time and patience to browse and are looking for a bargain. Definitely not the place to find a high quality rare book, unless you happen to stumble upon it by accident. I did find an old hardcover version of the original Battlestar Galactica movie for $5 once, so anything is possible."^^ . "1"^^ . . .
