I took my boyfriend here on a distillery tour today - whiskey is not usually my spirit of choice, but I knew my man would love it and I was interested in the history portion of the experience. When I booked the tour I was expecting a fun date, but I had no idea how much I would end up loving Wigle Whiskey!\n\nI had been to Wigle before with some out of town friends just to try a few cocktails and hang out. It was a pretty cool experience, so I knew I wanted to come back for a distillery tour at some point. When we first entered Wigle today, we were given wristbands and then told to proceed to the bar and pick out any cocktail we wanted, free with admission. Awesome! I tried the cranberry gin fizz since I'm partial to gin, and my boyfriend tried the Sazerac. We were both totally satisfied with our drinks! The gin (called \"Ginever\" here) is actually a whiskey based gin rather than the typical vodka base. It is definitely different, but with an open mind I really enjoyed the taste.\n\nAs we embarked on our tour, we were immediately impressed by the knowledge of our tour guide. Not only was he knowledgable and able to answer all of our questions, but he was also hilarious and really got our group to have a great time together despite the fact that none of us knew each other. During the tour we learned all about the Whiskey Rebellion in Western PA, which was super interesting. I never realized that Pittsburgh played such a large role in the history of whiskey production. We tried two more samples during our tour - one of a spiced rum, and one of a white whiskey.\n\nAt the end of the tour, we proceeded to a little tasting area. We then tried 3 more samples, basically like a small \"flight.\" This flight included the Ginever, which I had at this point deemed my favorite. My man greatly enjoyed the whiskey, especially the fact that these are all made in small batches and are therefore more labor-intensive and subsequently more flavorful than your basic Jim Beam or Jack Daniels. As we left the tour, we were given a sample of a chocolate truffle made at Mon Aimee chocolates in the Strip that are infused with the white whiskey made at Wigle. This truffle was absolutely DELICIOUS and was a perfect way to top off the tour!\n\nOverall, I highly recommend a tour at the Wigle Whiskey distillery. Even if you don't love whiskey in particular (like me), you'll enjoy the overall experience and the lesson in Western PA history.
