None of the sushi options sounded very exciting, so we went with the Vietnamese offerings.\n\n02. GOI CUON: A must order for me at any pho joint. These paled in comparison to Pho Van's, sadly. The rolls were stuffed with shredded lettuce, and the taste of the rather pork overpowered the shrimp. On top of that, both were shoved to the background by the basil. Good thing I'm a basil fan, but this addition would have been much improved if they had chiffonaded it and dispersed it throughout the roll instead of making you bite off a whole leaf at a time. We left half a roll behind. The dipping sauce was nice and sweet, but sadly tasted very mall-food-courty and not very peanutty at all, despite the big crumbs of peanut they sprinkle on top. I usually view everything on the table as fair game as a vehicle for peanut sauce, but this rendition just wasn't doing it for me.\n\n11. BO BUN HUE: They made this extra spicy for me and it was HUGE. The meat was fairly sparse, with only a few pieces of shaved beef and 2 slices of pork roll, but I was super pleased with the amount of broth I received, which is what I'm all about. Noodles need not apply, as I never find that pho noodles are anything to write home about. While the broth was spicy and rich though, I found that it lacked the depth and umami that my favorite bowls in Pittsburgh have. The usual accompaniments of basil, lime, cilantro, and sprouts were served, along with some shredded red cabbage, interesting. \n\nBANH MI 1. DELUXE HOAGIE: A brilliant size for a $6 sandwich. I appreciated the traditional fillings, but this was a bit bland. It was missing some type of sauce, like Lucy puts on her banh mi's at her eponymous stand further down the strip. That sweet sauce she brushes on her sandwiches is like crack, and Maiku's could have used something of the sort to make the various meat fillings come alive. The major major issue, though is that the bread was baguette-level hard, almost in a stale sort of way. As in, way too hard for a banh mi-style sandwich. It made my husband's jaw hurt to finish it, and he's pretty much a sandwich-eating pro.\n\nBUBBLE TEA 12. MILK TEA: Moderately milky, the tea was okay, but the boba was bland. We finished the tea but left the rest.\n\nThe atmosphere here is a nice stop for a leisurely meal, as I'm a fan of cozy spaces, but everything we ordered was just a bit off our preferred taste. Most importantly, as much as I wanted to like Maiku, I don't see myself returning to any place that can't nail a peanut sauce. I have my priorities, after all."^^ . "2017-02-20T00:00:00"^^ . "2"^^ . .
