I had seen Dr. Pappas for several years and then had to change dentists because my insurance changed and they are quite pricey without full coverage. I had received good care and so when it changed again and I called to see if I was covered. I was told that "yes, I was covered at 90 % and that they would "write-off" the other 10 % as a patient courtesy because I was with Cigna." I came in for a cleaning, x-rays and flouride treatment. As typical, I paid for the flouride out of pocket at that time because it is generally not covered and I was aware of this. My dental hygienist was amazing (the main reason I was so excited to go back) but only see the dentist for 5-10 minutes total (which is fine, no cavities...). I then received an e-mail about 3 months later stating that my insurance company was not paying the full bill (they did pay $257 per their statement to me). Then in early November I was told that as it turns out my insurance does not contract with them (again, I was told by the office that they did) and that I was responsible for another $159, which makes the visit more than $450 for a cleaning and x-rays. I was told that they were still honoring the 10 % discount because of their error as a courtesy but did not offer any other concessions as to the rest of the bill, even though it was not my error, but theirs. I am very frustrated by the lack of financial transparency and their care is certainly not worth $450 for a cleaning. I will not be returning to the office and warn others to check with their own insurance companies every time to avoid a similar scenario. I understand that my insurance is not paying the full bill but feel they should have met me in the middle as it was an error made by their staff.
