Eyebrows go through fashion phases just like anything else. In the 1940's Bette Davies rocked the perfectly drawn on arched look, the 1980's went all neanderthal and thick bushy brows were everywhere, in the '90's everyone went for a wax and now in the noughties fashionistas everywhere are raving about the "new" method of threading. What the heck are they on about? Threading has been a part of Asian culture for hundreds of years, originating in Persia where it was called "Bande Abru"( thread eyebrow). I became a fan of threading five years ago and have never looked back. As my eyebrows grow quickly, waxing needed to be done almost every week or I would look like Liam and Noel Gallagher (put together). Strange really, my head hair takes a year to grow an inch yet my eyebrows could be corn rowed in a fortnight. Anyway, I tried several different places until I settled on Roop. Harvey Nicks was too expensive, another place had the most sadistic cow who grinned maniacally when I screamed as she threaded, another lovely lady stopped to pray every five minutes and a 5 minute job took over an hour. Roop saved the day and I met Harmideh, the Nicky Clarke of eyebrows. This lady is fast and painless. As she pulls the twisted cotton thread over my brows she keeps you talking and in the blink of an eye (5 minutes to be precise) you are done. Neat, straight and not too red, my eyebrows look fantastic and I don't have that startled deer caught in the headlights look I used to have with waxing. And all for £4!!! Total bargain. Roop is also a hairdressers and do eyebrow and lash tinting but I think I will keep to the threading. The only off-putting thing here is that after your eyebrows have been done, the lovely Harmideh or her assistants always ask you if you want your upper lip done too. Perhaps this is just a routine question but after declining politely, I pay, then run to the car , pull down the mirror and check to see if I have a Groucho Marx or Magnum P.I tache going on. Makes you paranoid all day! Despite this I will always entrust my eyebrows to the epilatory expertise of Roop.
