Whoever came up with the idea of unique, sound design and the utmost attention to even the most minute detail when it comes to the overall hotel experience-- I want to shake your hand. While I wouldn't pigeonhole the Thompson Toronto in the boutique hotel category, it seems more a part of the ongoing trend of one-of-a-kind hotels; a burgeoning trend where hoteliers are constantly outdoing their hospitality predecessors. I, for one, am a fan of this trend and, after my awesome experience at the Thompson, am sure to return.
To give you an insight into the entrance of the hotel: it's squeal worthy. Everything is so well-coordinated, from the light fixtures to the tie bars on the doorman's tie. The overall feel was in every way impressive without feeling too deliberate or overdone. The reception area has a dark, sleek feel to it which served well as a precursor to the rest of the hotel.
When my bf and I arrived, there were a few check-in roadblocks during the process (credit card swipey machine problems) but in exchange for the very minor inconvenience, our room was upgraded for free. The front desk workers were all friendly, cooperative, down to earth and genuine, not snooty or stuck up. Hooray!
The hotel room, just like the reception and foyer areas, was ridiculous. Ridiculously awesome, that is. Hardwood flooring, corner to corner wall-sized windows (with sheer and blackout curtains), modern lamps and chairs and a large HD TV. There's also ample closet space, a mini fridge and an ironing board. Hint: there are four mini switches which connect to different light sources within the bedroom and bathroom-- have fun figuring out which switches connect to which light sources!
Don't even get me started on the bathroom. It's spacious and clean! The shower is of the rain bath persuasion, in case you were wondering. The bathroom is segmented into two parts: the can is furthest away from the door with a sliding door of its own and the sink and shower are in their own segment. Ahh, the one-person-in-the-bathroom-at-a-time dilemma is no more!
As if all that didn't make you want to leave your hotel room already, there's a rooftop infinity pool that overlooks Toronto. Only downside is that space is rather limited so make sure you get a stakeout early in order to catch some rays, or be banished to shady areas surround the pool. There's an upstairs bar as well. There was a fitness room on Level 3, but was close because, well, there just wasn't any equipment in there, the place was so new.
The downstairs bar is also noteworthy-- although since the entire hotel and bar have only been open for a little while, their beer selection is scanty (2 bottled beers to choose from) as is their liquor selection.
Added plus: screening room downstairs!
