We've been wanting to go to the Golden Steer for so long due to the history and what we had heard about the food. The ambiance is awesome, even though they pack people into the same corner until it's completely full when the other side of the room is empty. Don't understand that concept, but server Mike was great, along with his crew. He was on top of our needs throughout the evening. There was a 3 combo appetizer special, both in hot and cold versions. We got the hot version with calamari, ravioli and stuffed mushroom. We had forgotten about all the bad reviews on the mushrooms. Needless to say, the other reviews are accurate. The mushrooms were awful and cold. In fact, none of the appetizer plates were real hot. The calamari and ravioli are mediocre at best and the ravioli is breaded a fried (didn't expect that and it was not good). The term I used throughout the evening was "ordinary". We also ordered the Caesar Salad, sans anchovy paste, and it was cool having it made at your table. Taste was what you would expect, but for the price, I would have at least expected the large pieces of cheese you get on nice salads and perhaps homemade croutons...instead we had shaker cheese and croutons out of a bag. Nothing to write home about with the salad. For dinner, my husband ordered the Veal Parmigiana. After the first bite, I could tell it was awful...he was not impressed and was real disappointed since we expected to have a really good dinner. I ordered the bone-in ribeye, as it's a specialty there....and it was very good and cooked to a perfect medium-rare. They can do steaks just fine. For the sides, we ordered the mashed potatoes and broccoli. The broccoli was barely cooked, so very crunchy and had absolutely nothing on it; no olive oil, butter...nothing. Couldn't eat it so packed it to take home and steam myself with some olive oil. The mashed potatoes were ok, but nothing stellar. I could eat those, but took most of it home. Finally, for dessert, I ordered bananas foster for one. It's cool they make it table side with the fire show and it was really good. Glad there was a good dessert after a mostly disappointing meal. Tab was around $225...and definitely not worth it. We won't have dinner there again, but are glad we went and now finally know! Way too much $$ for mediocre (at best) food.
