The Underdown Pub is a literally underground spot at Gerrard and Berkeley. Happening new pubs are popping up like crazy in this part of town and the Underdown is no exception. I popped in around midnight on Saturday night and the place was filled to the brim. There was a live band playing and just about everyone was holding a beer and rocking out to the music. Good times. Music seems to the focus of the Underdown. Their event calendar is full of acts, and Saturday night's show was solid -- the band played hard all night. Both the stage and shop are tiny, which means it's not great for groups but there isn't a bad seat in the house if you're there for the show. The beer is pretty affordable. Bottles of domestic were $4 and draughts were around $5.75. There isn't a tonne of selection at the taps (I saw Moosehead, Orange Peel, and Waupoos Cider), but they have a pretty good array of bottles. I was pretty impressed with the service too. We were an unwieldy group, and the bar was packed, but the bartenders handled it with aplomb. A great first impression of the Underdown. I hope to come back and see some more acts. Obligatory Title Pun: Get DOWN with the UNDERground. Menu Readability: The bartender just shouted the options at me. Need to mention: There was cover for the band, but it's PWYC. What this place teaches me about myself: My entire party was wearing white phantom masks when I walked in. I can safely report that I am creeped out by masks.
