If you have ever read a review of mine, there's a high possibility you know I'm a Penguins fan. I drop a hint every two or three reviews. I typically attend 4-6 games a year, and the Marriott City Center is my usual home away from home. Although name "city center" (and technically being the middle of the city), I find the location has a major plus and con. The plus: it is right next to arena. Literally. The only hotel that even compares in a close factor is the Cambria Suites, and Marriott is better than Choice all day everyday. The con: the area around the arena is not fully built up yet, so if it's not game day, there aren't many options to hang out at. You'll need to walk over to the area by the Renaissance, or take a taxi to north shore or south side to hang out. Marriott namesakes have my favorite scent (every full service Marriott brand has a signature scene that is prominently funneled into the lobby), so I always feel welcomed when walking into one. The valets are efficient and speedy; it's never taken more than 5-10 minutes to get my car. The front desk is also fast and they're very helpful. I still remember my very first time staying at this hotel 3 years ago. It was only my second time in Pittsburgh and I wasn't familiar with the area, so the receptionist took the time to obtain a map and hand draw all her favorite running paths, stores, and restaurants. I've also never had a problem checking in early. Obviously I know it depends on the time of day and how busy they were the night before, but I appreciate that I've never had to drop off my luggage and come back. The rooms are roomy and comfortable. I've stayed on both sides of the hotel, and I don't think either way faces a better view. They both have an industrial view of the city, but I don't spend a lot of time in my room when I'm there so I don't mind. The rooms are always clean. I'm a room service fiend (I'm lazy), and I've always experienced a good meal. If I had to nitpick, the elevators are a tad slow. I've waited a long time after games to get up into my room. Also, the microwave is in the business center, which I find weird. I guess I should be appreciative that they have a microwave at all! The pool and fitness center are small but they get the job done, and there's a Starbucks conveniently located in the lobby. Marriott Pittsburgh City Center is one of my top choices when visiting the Steel City, and should be your number 1 choice when going to a Penguins game. Go pens!
