I've lived in quite a few places over the last decade (8 or so) and I have to say Scottsdale Shadows has been my favorite residence so far.
The grounds are incredibly well maintained, there are always a ton of activities going on, and all the staff and residents I've encountered have been helpful and friendly.
The location is great- its close enough to Old Town for a night out with a $5 uber ride but far enough away to have peace and quiet during crazy events. The Shadows is within walking distance to Sprouts grocery, Zipps and Clancy's sports bars, a sushi restaurant, and Tj Maxx. Score.
There is a bit of an older crowd, however, it seems a lot more people in their 20s/30s have been moving in over the last few months.
