As someone not familiar with guns, I opted to take the NRA First Steps Pistol Orientation. Thumbs up for having online registration and payment. Johnny Sheets was the instructor. Although the students indicated that were taking the course for reasons other than safety and defense, the course immediately started with a negative tone and how we should all carry guns because the world is terrible and very scary...but after the first 20 minutes that faded. The $99 dollars course gets you the three hours of class room instruction, a rental gun, target, and the instructor comes in the range with you to make sure you're comfortable. You will have to pay for bullets, so expect ~$20 additional to the course fee. Johnny was very helpful and made us all feel at ease while we were shooting and he's got a talent for the hands-on aspects of teaching. It wasn't clear to me that we could try as many guns during our session as we wanted so that we could learn how a pistol vs. a semi-automatic felt, but I realized after the fact that I could. It'd be great if they added more detail to the training course description to explain what is included and that you can try more than one gun. A few days later, I returned and felt comfortable enough to shoot alone. I used a $29 groupon for unlimited shooting and rentals for the day. Everyone who works at Blackstone is extremely helpful, friendly, and patient. They're willing to answer any question and make everyone feel welcome. Great spot to learn and return again and again.
