Having heard about this from a good friend who was visiting Toronto, before me, I thought I'd check it out. When i first swung by there was an INSANE line. Why are these people waiting for what some have said would be 90mins for ice cream I see in freezer of convenience stores? Do they not have jobs? Lives? friends? Local grocers with a frozen foods section? I left, but figured since the store was only two blocks away from home I could return sometime early near opening and be fine. I was mostly right. While there was a line when I returned, it was pretty short so I begrudgingly got in it, knowing it would move quickly. So how was it? Let me say this: the Magnum Ice Cream Bar is likely one is the best ice cream bars you can purchase in your grocery store. Which is kinda like winning a gold medal in the 100m at the special Olympics. We're all very proud of the accomplishment, but lets be real about this: you're not taking on Usain Bolt anytime soon. The base appears to be identical to the store bought bar. And I suspect the dips are all the same as well(yes they have some "special ones". Oooo!! But come on now). So you have an above average grocery store freezer aisle ice cream, dipped in marginally passable chocolate. "Oh but they have lots of toppings!) I hear people say. They do, this is true. And everyone gets excited about bacon being an option. And who can blame them? BACON IS AWESOME!!!!! But I don't care what you choose to top it with(and there are many many many options. Wait. Is this the Cheesecake Factory method? What we lack in quality we will compensate for with a dizzying array of options? Well played. Well not WELL played, but played. you're out there. You're playing) what you have is a grocery store ice cream bar with stuff you've added to it. Bravo! A Brilliant, incredibly successful, well executed PR & Marketing. I mean that seriously. They have done an incredible job. The store looks great. It really does. And this seems to be a fantastically successful stunt. But when it comes down to it they are polishing a turd. You can find much better ice cream nearby(or even in your local grocery store) that doesn't require waiting in line for an inordinate amount of time.
