Au Pied de Cochon (the pigs feet) is one of Montreal's signature eating establishments alongside Joe Beef. With a heavy emphasis on meat products, especially foie gras, it's popular with locals and tourists alike. Reservations are recommended, which we did, but they were extremely accommodating when we stopped by very early and decided to change our original much later reservation.
Walking by the street, I almost missed the restaurant as there's only a menu posted outside and not much signage, but go where everyone is dining and you'll be at the right shop. The interior is modern and clean with friendly wait staff and a nice bar area with seating as well. The ambiance is noisy with conversations while quick food service keeps the mood fun and enjoyable. The menu is straightforward with appetizers, main entrees, and dessert listed on a single page with an entire section devoted to foie Gras. Everything sounds delicious and the waiter was happy to explain anything we didn't know as well as the handful of daily specials. Our order:
Maple Foie Gras Comesquis - $8. What a great start with these bite sized appetizers of deep fried dough around molten foie Gras. Served quite hot, you simply pop them into your mouth and enjoy the explosion of richness and flavor. Mmmmm.
Onion Soup - $15. I'd been craving a excellent rendition of this French classic and Au Pied delivered. It's covered with melted cheese but has plentiful rich and savory broth that includes onions but also another unique spin with delicious pieces of aged ham that add both flavor and meatiness to this great soup. So good and perfect for sharing.
Carpaccio - $16. You see this dish at many places but the uniqueness here is that the meat of choice is duck meat. Rare pieces of thinly sliced duck meat are served on a generous platter with thin slices of cheese and a single perfectly poached egg yolk that you break and spread over the carpaccio. Delicious and a nice contrast to the richer items on the menu.
Tartare Tataki - $15. I almost didn't order this but am so glad I did. It's literally a hand roll served with their choice of Tartare and a quail egg that you pour on top. Our evening it was horse Tartare and you're either in or out when it comes to horse meat (and most Montreal residents are in) and after my delicious horse entree at Joe Beef, I was in. It was delicious with a beefy Tartare that is as good as any hand roll I've had. Delicious.
Plogue a Champlain - $31. Alongside the foie Gras Poutine, this is one of Au Pied de Cochon's signature foie gras dishes. Since I was all "poutines out", this dish was a perfect choice for us. It's a pancake, covered in pig lard, and topped with a huge piece of cooked foie Gras and maple syrup. The French description admittedly sounds more appetizing than the description but it's a delicious mix of savory and sweet with rich and starchy. After a few bites, I quickly began to feel satiated.
Duck In a Can - $44. After so many delicious starters, ordering an entree clearly put us over the top but how could we come without ordering this signature dish. The dish is exactly as described. A duck leg combined with foie gras, bacon, cabbage and spices is literally canned and heated in the can to be dumped on top of a plate of puréed butternut squash and two baguette slices. The amazing thing is that you'd expect something to be either overcooked or undercooked but everything, and I mean everything, comes out perfectly. The duck was medium rare and well flavored. The foie Gras was cooked and soft as nicely as the other Plogue dish. The cabbage and bacon were hearty and mixed well with all the juices from both. This dish is great for sharing and even-so is pure gluttony. Very unique, very good and very memorable.
Overall, I'm so happy to have stopped by Au Pied De Cochon. I left ecstatic and satiated on the buzz of the great cocktails but also the richness of the food. All the dishes were so unique yet consistent and well done. I'm not sure I'll eat foie Gras again this year but I'm happy to have spent my yearly (lifetime?) quota here. Thank you Au Pied de Cochon, especially for accommodating our earlier dinner time. I slept very well.
Au Pied de Cochon accepts credit cards including Amex.
