Went here on a whim yesterday as we were in the area. This is one of the better state park/historic sites. We would not have half of America without President Polk.
We entered the museum and we're cheerfully greeted. We were told about the ins and outs of the place to ensure a full experience. She even made sure we made it to the live musket shooting demonstration
They have a few period houses on site with individuals dressed for that time period. We learned how they lived. The older gentleman was extremely knowledgeable about the history and discussed bout the start of the Mexican war, troop movements and strategies.
Sharon in the cook house was fabulous and passionate to share. We learned all the different ways to use cast iron, even a toe toaster you place bread inside, toast one side near the fire then twist it around with your foot to toast the other. Pretty clever. The fire place was a crucial part back then and it was important to know how to build a good one.
They have events that have live cooking demonstrations too. It's free; however, donations are encouraged. They also show a short movie bout Polk. Muesum had maps and all kinds of artifacts. Great place to bring the family and learn about our country's rich history.
