When it opened in June 1990 it was amazing. While the Mirage started the mega resorts in Vegas the year before. This was one the new of the amazing mega themed hotels and casinos and MGM was the leader. While the Mirage was beautiful, I had never seen anything like the Excalibur before. I was a Stardust stayer. But I could see it was time to start thinking about staying else where. This was something to see. It was the begining of a new era in hotels/casinos on the Vegas strip. It was like there was a war going on to see who could build the most amazing hotels and casinos on the strip. Las Vegas was changing. I could see the difference in the people that stated coming to Las Vegas, people with more money, everyone wanted to come here.
Excalibur is right across the street just north of the Luxor and south of New York New York on Las Vagas Blvd. I did the visit here this past trip as I did the Luxor before heading back home. This time I just went to the casino. This is another one close to the airport so like Luxor and Mandalay Bay it's a good one when you have time to kill before a flight, i used to go to the Klondike for this. It is connected by a monorail that goes to the Luxor and Mandalay Bay.
We walked from the Luxor, its a short walk across a street and then parking lot and right into the Excalibur's casino. Its not a bad casino, smaller minumum tables. Lots of slot machines. It just doesn't seemed to have been kept up as well as it should. I guess after all it's more than 30 years old. WOW, more than 30 year, that is crazy, hard to believe. I checked out the room prices and they are quite reasonable for the strip.
I hope this is a hotel and casino that stays here. The shows that I have seen here have been good, I have had good food here. I had some luck gambling here. But, as I have seen so many casinos come and go, this one seems to be following one that may be on its way out. Time will tell. It's worth the visit.
