If you are coming from NY or CT traveling to Montreal, Lacolle Border Crossing is your best bet mileage wise, having said that, it is always a crap shoot once you arrive at the border as to how long the queue is. The earlier in the day you arrive the better, between 8 to 9:30am seems to be best. For many, an overnight in Plattsburgh works nicely as the border is 15 mins from there and Montreal another 50 minutes. An overnight gives you almost a full day in Montreal. When leaving Canada don't forget to stop at the Duty Free Shop, often there are promotions on beer, wine, spirits, colognes and perfumes.
