What a horrible unmemorable name (the "Deli Steakhouse" part. I get the history of the "Main part, but still the sum of its parts is just forgettable). And do they even have steak? Just as bad was the dated, not very charming interior. I dig old restaurants but this seemed sad. Thankfully the food made up for it. We shared their specialty, a smoked meat sandwich. It was unexpectedly served with mustard (not mentioned on the menu) so my husband asked for new bread and I took the mustard-y pieces to make myself my own sandwich. (There was so much meat on the sandwich that we actually took it apart to make two new sandwiches.) We ordered medium leanness but wish wish we'd ordered it leaner. For the record, it *was* the expected amount of fat for medium leanness. The maztoh ball soup was very good. It wasn't Second Street Deli (NYC) or D.Z. Akin's (San Diego) quality but still was one of the better ones. It consisted simply of two balls and broth. The potato verenke was the clunker of the evening. We made the mistake of ordering it fried instead of boiled and it was just *too* fried. It was also a small portion - not that it mattered since we didn't really want it. The potato latkes were good and thick. For verenkes and latkes you could only pick a side of applesauce or sour cream to go with them and not both. Lame. Kathleen's International (okay, just the U.S. and Canada) Jewish Deli Rankings 1) D.Z. Akin's, San Diego 2) Centre Street Deli, Toronto 3) Second Avenue Deli, New York City 4) California Street Delicatessen & Café, San Francisco (closed) 5) Ben's Kosher Deli, New York City 6) Yonah Schimmel's Knishes Bakery, New York City 7) MAIN DELI STEAKHOUSE, MONTREAL 8) Carnegie Deli, New York City 9) Miller's East Coast Deli, San Francisco 10) Saul's, Berkeley 11) Brother's Deli, Burlingame (closed) 12) Ben's Kosher Deli, New York City 13) Gunthers, San Jose (I'm not including Stage Deli in Las Vegas, Max's in San Francisco, or Nate n Al's in Beverly Hills.)
