Gosh, for the dozens of meals I've had here, I'm surprised I haven't rated this place yet. I used to live just down the block, on Jenifer St. That was about six years ago, but to this day I can recall several legendary menu items from heart. The Meatloaf of the Gods. The Meatless Meatloaf of the Gods. The Reuben. Reuben's vegetarian cousin, the Sheldon. The Mediterranean Sunrise breakfast. The potato-zucchini pancakes with sour cream and cranberry-applesauce. Each of these was a delicious new step for me in discovering the foodie scene in Madison when I lived there. So when I visited recently with my old roommate from Jenifer St., Monty's was the natural choice to grab a bite to eat. To my initial dismay, the menu had been updated... no more Sheldon! This was my favorite vegetarian Reuben sandwich back in the day. I asked the waiter about it, and he offered to get a Sheldon made for me, no problem! When it arrived, it was exactly as I had remembered it. Delicious tofu and sauerkraut on rye bread with a side of Thousand Island dressing. After a long day, I couldn't think of anything more satisfying. Monty's is a true gem that stands tall, even among Madison's robust food culture. Every time I go here, my expectations are exceeded. I can't recommend it enough.
